A Novices' Primer - 4. Radio Equipment

The choice of radio gear is not as complex as choosing a motor. I believe that there are only two brands worth considering. These are JR and Futaba. Either cost around £150 to £170 for a complete beginners outfit. This will include all of the items that you require. In terms of reliability it is not possible to separate the two so this call is down to personnel preference. An R/C Transmitter

However, there are a couple of decisions you do need to make. The first is the number of channels you want. You can go for either 4 or 6 functions. The minimum you need to fly your trainer is 4 but some of the features with the 6 channel outfits are very useful especially when you progress onto your next model. This one is up to you. The next choice is the mode you wish to fly on. This is either mode 1(throttle right) or mode 2 (throttle left). The majority of flyers in N.R/C.S. fly mode 1 so this would be the option of choice if you wish to receive tuition from one of the club instructors.

Either of the above makes of radio equipment are so good these days that this item really is fit and forget. You should not experience any problems provided it is all looked after reasonably well. Should you have an unfortunate mishap both makes have service facilities for repairs but in all honesty with current prices it is almost worth considering replacing badly damaged radio gear components with new items as the need arises.
